This was a 7 year old male that was referred for treatment of their increasing peripheral exudation despite previous laser treatment.
This patient had typical findings of early Coats’ Disease (Stage 2A) with mostly temporal and peripherally located vessel thickening/dilatation, telangiectasias, bulb-like aneurysms as well as capillary drop out clearly seen on angiography. This patient had non-central exudation that was progressing towards the macular despite previous laser.
Coats’ disease is a congenital, nonhereditary retinal vascular disorder that is usually unilateral (~90%) and affects males (~80%) predominantly. As disease progresses the vessels leak and exudation leads to exudative retinal detachments and eventually neovascular glaucoma.
Treatment ranges from observation, laser, cryotherapy or surgery for advanced cases.
Here’s a series of photos demonstrating the effectiveness of laser photocoagulation, 3 months later on the reduction of disease activity, exudation and abnormal vessels.
